How music and globalization affect telenovelas
These past two weeks in class I have learned how music and globalization affect telenovelas. In telenovelas, there are two types of production music which are known as incidental music and theme. Incidental music in telenovelas lets the audience know that something is about to happen or if the scene is going to be depressing or joyful. Since I can remember, the music that happens in a scene really drives the audience to pay close attention to the scene for they can understand what is about to happen. Music builds up more the suspense in some scenes, for example In the telenovela of “Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso”, diabla was being transported to another jail and then you see two guys on a building, aiming at the car and ready to shoot and blow the car up with her in it. Turns out after they shot everyone was hurt or dead and La Diabla opened her eyes and walked away with some burns, cuts and bruises. On the other hand, some scenes have music in the background where the audience can tell that nothing bad is going to happen because of how upbeat or pleasing the music sounds like in “Tierra de Reyes.”

Furthermore, the other production music is acknowledged as theme. Theme can be essentially the opening song, subplot, and the characters song in telenovelas. For example, in the telenovela “La Reina del Sur”, the opening song describes her life completely changed after one phone call and how she had to adjust her life and learn new things. Also, another telenovela that incorporates the life of the main character is “El Señor de los Cielos” which is another narco telenovela that leaves you on the edge of your seat almost on every episode, In like manner, characters like the protagonist, antagonist, and some other characters get their own song that plays when he or she appear on screen or when there is a couple on screen. For certain characters, they each had their own song like in “Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso”, Daniela (La diabla’s daughter) had her own song in the telenovela. In the telenovelas that I have seen like “Tierra de Reyes”, “Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso”, “La Reina de Corazones”, and many more, each couple had their own unique song when they were together or when they were kissing each other. Personally, I feel that the music in telenovelas really helps out the scenes to captivate the moment and incorporate more emotion or even suspense in some cases.

Last but certainly not least, today we learned about how globalization has affected telenovelas. Telenovelas come in different languages such as Spanish, Korean, Turkish, and many other diverse languages. As said in class, Betty is one of the most remade telenovela in the world and up to this day people still watch Betty no matter how many times it has been remade. Some telenovelas were successful in their remakes but others were not. The remakes really depend on how the people react to it. Also, I learned that telenovelas can be turned into U.S. series and vice versa. Finding out that there are more telenovelas on digital platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, amazon prime, Blim(Mexico), and BluTv(Turkey), makes me wonder how many Telenovelas I have not seen.
Hey Yaires!
ReplyDeleteI have also been paying more close attention to the background music in the TV shows that I watch after this lecture! I never realized how much it affected the mood of a scene and how it was meant to be received. Viewers can connect the characters that have their own theme songs with a certain mood or feeling. For example, antagonists tend to have eerie, suspicious music because we know they're going to do something to ruin the protagonists plans.
Thank you for including some examples of these theme songs in videos! I really enjoyed them and it helped me realize that songs also supplement an actor's character without scenes or words. You know someone is meant to be a malicious character when you hear the background music without them outright saying anything.
Remakes of shows are also really interesting when studying how well they do in the country they are remade in! Some concepts travel well and others don't, but it's a good reminder that certain shows have a deep context that is imbedded within a nation's culture. I look forward to watching remakes of shows in other languages to see what has changed! Great post!!
