What It's Like Behind the Camera
When watching telenovelas, or even any show, it's easy to just get wrapped into the episode/series. I know that I personally never really consider all the work that goes into the process. From directors, to writers, to the camera crew, to the mic guys; there's so much behind the scenes that we never really consider. Just today I learned about all the different directors there are for each different section of the set. Not to mention that each director has many people working under them as well including floor managers and scripts. Never had I imagined that such jobs existed. But like I said earlier, it's so easy to get caught up in the show that you never really considered it.
Personally, when I really like a series I tend to binge watch it. Thanks to owning Netflix, I can do such a thing. However, if I were to watch a telenovela on tv, I would have to wait each day until the next episode came out. As a very young child, I always imagined these episodes were filmed the day before or that very day and that I was just watching it live. Later on in life I learned these shows were produced months in advanced due to needing time to edit the film, etc. Once I learned however that telenovelas were filmed maybe a week before they were aired, it absolutely blew my mind. The amount of talent that is needed from the writing crew, editing crew, actors, etc. in order to be able to stay on top of their game and continuously film amazes me. Again, something I never considered because most people really only pay attention to what's happening on the camera, rather than behind it.
Another thing I never really considered was the weather outside. Oh my gosh I could not give these actors the recognition they deserve for how well the act on the screen. Due to the fact they are constantly filming, they can't ever change weather drastically like some American series do. When Dr.A showed the scene today of the woman who had been left at the alter standing in her wedding dress, I had assumed it was fall or summer due to the fact she was in a strapless dress, but no I was wrong. Seeing the behind the scenes with everyone in their large coats blew my mind. She had portrayed it so well that it was nice outside, knowing well that it was freezing outside. I can't even walk outside when it's in the 50's without wearing a coat and still shivering. I applaud every actor involved in telenovelas considering they are consistently filming without breaks. From dusk to dawn.
Considering what I know now, compared to what I knew before about what's going on behind the scenes, I will forever watch the whole credits to where it shows every person involved in making an episode/movie/etc. I couldn't imagine, none the less handle, the pressure and stress they deal with on a daily basis in order for us to be satisfied for an hour a day.
It really amazes me how much effort the production crew, the actors, the writers, etc. are putting in shows and movies. A lot of the episodes of shows I watch nowadays come out weekly so only two episodes come out per week and it truly annoys me because I hate being left on cliffhangers. But after learning more about the behind the scenes process, I came to the realization that there are so many factors that play into these episode releases: the weather, the editing, and much more. Having to edit special effects and work with CGI must take a long time to perfect so that the scenes don't look too artificial, and the actors and actresses having to wear thin clothing in cold weather or rainy weather to fit the plot of the story. It's amazing to see how much effort is being put into each production so that viewers are satisfied with the outcome.
ReplyDeleteHey Caitlin!
ReplyDeleteThis class was also really really interesting to me because I also never realized how much behind-the-scenes "magic" really happens to put together the shows we love. In class, I was shocked to see how deeply external factors affect the order of telenovelas: seasons, children growing up and losing teeth or getting taller. For convenience, some scenes need to be shot out of order but small details can really mess with the fluidity of the show.
I think it's really really cool how telenovela writers can keep up with the comments and interest in their shows real-time and change the plot as necessary but it also makes me a little sad because they could be forgoing telling the story they really want to tell in favor of more views and popularity. All in all, fantastic points! These are all also things that were running through my mind during and after class!
