How consumption plays a major role in telenovelas.
Last week in class we learned about how consumption plays a big role in telenovelas. Telenovelas affect how the viewers see themselves or even their societies. People tend to watch telenovelas to interact with family and friends more when they are not together or even when they are all sitting in the living room waiting for the telenovela to start. Some people like watching telenovelas because of the romance between the characters such as the female and male protagonist. Also, what captures the audience's attention is the drama that is incorporated into the telenovela’s. Romance and drama are the two essential things that really drive a telenovela to where they are. My abuelita (which means grandma), has told me the reason that she loves watching telenovelas is because of the extreme plot twist, crazy inducing love stories, and the drama filled reactions. One of her favorite telenovelas are Passion de Gavilanes because of how three brothers wanted to avenge the death of a loved one by infiltrating the household of the person responsible, but it leads to other epic things that get you on the edge of your seat. My other abuelita is the opposite because she likes action which “Sin Senos no Hay Paraiso” there is so much action in different episodes, which lead to a shocking reveal at the end. After that telenovela ended, there was a sequel to it which is called “Sin Senos si Hay Paraiso” which continues from where the other one left off and has a different perspective than the main character from the other series.

There are many more novela's, but the one novela that I feel has a lot of romance and drama would be “La Reina de Flow” because it is about vengeance, murderers, and a secret identity for the main character. Like the majority of telenovelas, there is a love triangle. In this telenovela, Yeimy(the female) is head over heels in love with Charly(curly hair guy), who only pretends to like her because she can write amazing lyrics and he can not. But, then there is Juancho (wearing red cap), who is falling in love with her. But, Yeimy just wants to be friends with him. Moving along, Charly has an uncle who is a drug lord and everyone is scared of him. To make life easier for Charly and Manin(Chalry’s uncle)do a horrible thing to Yeimy such as putting drugs in her suitcase without letting her know, which leads her to 17 years in prison. However, that is not the only thing that Manin did to her. As the years go by she plans how she is going to get revenge on the two people that ruined her life. Not only are there more secrets being revealed, but there is romance, passion, and some family drama that goes to the next level. Not to mention, but season two is right around the corner and I can not wait to see it.

Consumption plays a big role in these two telenovelas because not only does it start off with a certain amount of episodes they always leave you with a cliffhanger to come back the next day and the day after that and so on. These telenovelas captivated a lot of attention from their viewers and so the writers kept on working on scripts for new seasons. The more romance and drama that there is in telenovelas, the more viewers they would gain.
I completely agree that consumption plays a big role in telenovelas because as e all know it is how the audience gets captivated to continue watching a show. Quite honestly I would say this blog post in itself is catering into the consumption of telenovelas because just off of that brief description of the plot for "La Reina De Flow" has made me want to go on Netflix and watch it after I have finished my own telenovela. This has also caused me to think about how different this seems to be on American television. A basic series unlike a telenovela doesn't have a certain amount of episodes it goes on and on until the writers milk every last penny from it. This is different for a telenovela because they have a set episode number that limits the time for writers to milk their cash cow, but this also creates the reason why understanding consumption and hat the viewers want to see is so important in Latin American countries. Here in America a studio can make an awful series that will run for two episodes and suffer less consequences than an unsuccessful telenovela because they have been allowed a certain amount of resources for their episodes and with no viewers their budgets can't increase to keep up with what the viewers would want to see.
